I can't count how many times I've told someone that I wanted to do Hispanic marketing and they've looked at me with a gesture that says, "You’re kidding, right?" The truth is, they have a myopic view of what Hispanic advertising can be. For one thing, it doesn't necessarily have to be in Spanish, especially if the market is made up of bilingual young Latinos who appreciate and love American culture just as much as that of their grandparents. A recent article in Ad Age exposed the changing landscape of U.S. born...
Andrew is not like other designers. While he possesses the skill set to do major client work and carries the charisma of the guy-next-door, he does most things pro-bono and even tries is hand in promoting other designers, which is unusual for such a competitive landscape like graphic design. He takes whatever pictures you throw at him and sends them back to you cropped, cut, and looking pretty. He recently called on all people with a beard to send him their pictures, which he would resend packaged as a...
I don't know if you've heard, but Jimmer Fredette is a champ. He is leading the NCAA in scoring, and has moved his team to the number 3 ranking in the entire league. Our own ad lab, an entity of BYU, wanted to show a little support so we put together the Jimmer Show. Check it out here: http://thejimmershow.com/ Oh, and why not see a little taste of what BYU can do with parodies?
It is a rare occurrence indeed when I chance upon a gold nugget that few are aware of. Such an occurrence has...occurred. My friend Geoff Nelson went on a run one fine day when he passed a small note that said, "Pick me up." Inside the packet was a one hundred dollar bill. The bill could have easily convinced any rational person to go and spend it, but Geoff decided he could divide it..with a hundred people. His blog has few followers, true, but in the end his act of "paying it forward" may be the biggest payoff...
I knew early on that this particular friend of mine was funny. What I didn't know was that he was also well versed in production skills, editing, and a pretty established musician to boot. His video comedy series titled The Angel Murkurker is hilarious, unconventional, and at times overtly awkward, but it's also a breath of fresh air from the dry and clumsy humor on YouTube where any kid with a steady cam can successfully waste 5 minutes of your day that you never wanted to lose.
Remember that one time the BYU Ad Lab broke a world record, created a video that landed on YouTube's homepage and launched an independent artist into stardom? Well, the One Show did, and in conjunction with McCann New York, BYU students were awarded a bronze pencil in LA in the entertainment division. Not bad for STUDENTS, right? Thanks to the help of genius designer Barret Bodine, your minds will be blown by the soon-to-be-released portfolio pages detailing all the work I've done in the BYU Adlab as well as freelance work. Don't worry, all in good time -Spencer
The internet still amazes me. But what I love most about it is the inter-connectivity, especially with persons of celebrity status. Radiohead's last album, In Rainbows, was available for digital download free of charge before it hit store shelves months later. Their soon-to-be-released The King of Limbs may not go the same route, but we certainly can't complain about something new from the world's greatest band. If you know anything about me, you'll know that I LOVE Radiohead. It got me through my teenage years...
